With a total expected cost of Dh25 million, the construction work of the new building kicked off in December 2022 and by now nearly 40% of the work has been completed.
The project has been split into two phases, each costing Dh10 million and Dh15 million respectively.
The first phase includes the construction of a new hall where services are being currently held while in the second phase, new building for the cathedral will be constructed.
Meanwhile, Lulu Group Chairman and Managing Director Yusuffali M.A. has donated Dh1 million for the construction of St George Orthodox Cathedral’s new building.
The foundation stone of the St George Orthodox Cathedral was laid by the UAE’s Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1970 in Abu Dhabi’s Khalidiya area. However later, it was relocated to the Mushrif area in 1983. In 2004, the church was elevated as a cathedral.
In September 2022, the church building was demolished and the foundation stone for a new building was laid in December.
